Memories of Chuck

Janet was my dear friend from college. When we were in our Junior year, Janet and I each had a niece born in our families. Hers was "Joy" and mine was "Kathie". We often had competitions about whose niece was the cutest, smartest, etc. When she met and married Chuck, I kind of thought of him as a "friend-in-law", but as our relationship lasted about 55 years, he was soon thought of as a friend in his own right. I was honored to be a bridesmaid in their wedding. Ann (Gilchrist) Grubb was the soloist. Janet and Chuck made us happy by coming to our wedding in MD a couple of years later. We had a very small wedding and we honored them by calling them the "honorary cake eaters". Over the years, we made frequent visits to Ohio to see them, now with Deborah and Greg, and they made several journeys to Massachusetts. We were so saddened by Greg's death and tried in vain to fly to the funeral. In Newark, NJ, we flew in to see our connecting flight taking off for Cincinnati before we could depart the first plane. Our whole family, now even doubly sad flew back home. In a few weeks, however, they accepted our invitation to fly to Massachusetts for R & R (rest and relaxation). We were so flattered that they would share this very difficult time with us.
In our retirement years, we got to see them at the college reunions Ann Grubb organized in Tennessee. Having grandchildren was one of their greatest pleasures. We heard a lot about Nicholas and Elizabeth from time they were born until the last time we saw Chuck. It is with sadness that I write this and will always remember the Seely's.
